Abia NSCDC arrest two for child labour/attempted murder, rescues victim Ogbonnaya Ikokwu, Umuahia


The Abia state command of the Nigeria security and Civil Defence Corps has arrested one Emeka Igwe and Christiana  Godwin for an alleged child labour/trafficking and attempted muder.

The state commandant Mr. Vincent Ogu, in a statement by the Public Relations Officer Ndukwe Agwu, on Tuesday stated that the duo were arrested following a public outcry on the social media for allegedly pushing their house help down from the last floor of a two storey building in Aba the commercial hub the state.

The statement revealed  that  the victim a 13 year-old Uduaka Akpan, confessed that she jumped from the balcony of their apartment to escape punishment from her guardian who accused her of stealing her N500.

The victim also added that she was handed over to her guardian by a man identified only as Mbarakara in November 2020.

The Commandant stated," The supects were arrested following a public outcry prompted by a 

Viral information on the social media about a house help who was allegedly pushed down from the last floor of a two storey building by her madam's husband at No 204 Niger stone on port Harcourt road Aba.

"When we got wind of the incident by Mrs Chinememma Umesaka, the special adviser to the Governor  Okezie Ikpeazu, on teenage matters, I mobilized my men to rescue the victim and arrest the suspects.

"Our Aba South Divisional officer Uche Uduma, led a discreet search resulting in the arrest of the suspects

"Following the advice of our medical unit, we arranged for a full medical examination on the child at the Federal medical centre, Umuahia where she underwent chest digital X-RAY, abdomen ultra sound and C.T scan for her head".

"Our investigation revealed that the girl might be a victim of child trafficking given the controversies surrounding her movement from Akwa Ibom state to Aba. The victim was subjected to child labour and deprived of her right to formal education, while her mother was traced to Edo state".

The Commandant called on parents to take appropriate measures towards raising their children and monitor their guardian to ensure their safety.

He added that the suspect would be handed over to the law enforcement agency for prosecution.
