Police arrest five suspected kidnappers in Abia Ogbonnaya Ikokwu, Umuahia

The Commissioner of Police in Abia State, Mr Ene Okon, has confirmed the arrest of five suspected kidnappers in the Umuahia-Aba area of the Enugu Expressway.

It was learnt that the suspects were arrested by the operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad following a tip-off.

It was gathered that the SARS personnel were led by their commander, SP Obioguru Johnbull, to arrest the suspects.

Among those arrested is a suspected kidnap kingpin identified as Ejike Nwaokocha, who claimed to be a native doctor.

It was learnt that Nwaokocha drugged his victims with a native concoction and made them to behave in an insane manner to enable him chain them and claim they were receiving treatment.

The CP said the suspects were responsible for armed robbery and kidnapping of innocent citizens in Isialangwa, Umuahia-Aba Road and the Owerrinta area of the state.

Okon added that four victims, including two corps members were, rescued unhurt from the suspects following a hot chase by the police.

He stated, “The men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Abia State Command, arrested five suspects on January 5, 2020, in Isiala Ngwa for kidnapping in the zone.

“The suspects all confessed to the crime. They are in our custody and we will charge them after investigation.”

Okon pointed out that the state witnessed a peaceful Christmas and New Year celebration.

He attributed the success of the command in policing the state during the festivities to the long-term plan to project lives and properties in the state.

The CP added, “We promised Abia residents a peaceful Christmas and New Year celebration and the people can attest to the calmness enjoyed during the period.

“We are not going to arrest on our laurels in securing lives and property in the state. We, therefore, urge the general public to provide us with useful information about suspected movements in their environment on time.”
